Genesis 25

So when Esau came in from the field for some food Jacob told him to give up his birthright and then he may eat. He practically said ok especially when he was going to die anyway. I dont understand this part of the text. Why was he going to die? And even so what does the birthright have to do with anything at this point? Just so he is stronger and the youngest has to listen to the eldest?
