1 Sam and 2 Sam

In general, I view God as a perfect man/being. He is kind, gentle, forgiving, and causes no pain at all. He doesnt cause problems for any one person or thing. And does not set out to try to kill anyone. So how is it that I am reading that he is giving orders to set out to kill people? 1 Sam 15:2-3 Thus says the Lord of hosts, "I will punish the Amalkekites for what they did in opposing the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt. Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have; do not spare them , but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey."

I know that no one is perfect and maybe the Amalkekites deserved it, but its the fact that I was taught that God is forgiving and that by asking for forgiveness he does forgive. So when reading this, it draws a whole new focus towards him….
